A collision between a propane truck and a Volvo last night sent the drivers to the hospital and closed a section of Route 101 into the late-night hours. The truck from Suburban Propane overturned, trapping its driver, near the entrance to the Amherst Transfer Station.

Amherst Police Chief Peter Lyon said the propane truck driver — George Prevost III, 49, of Putnam Hill Road in Wilton — suffered minor injuries and was taken to Milford Medical Center.

The driver of the Volvo cross-country station wagon was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Police said Claire Sills, 59, of Freedom Way in Bedford, was being treated for serious injuries.

Police said the Volvo was traveling east when it crossed into the westbound lane and struck the westbound propane truck about 4:45 p.m. Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Accident reconstruction teams from the Amherst Police Department and State Police investigated the crash. Crews from Public Service of New Hampshire shut power to portions of town late last night so a crane could be used to right the truck after the propane was off-loaded, police said.
