Dunbar City Council voted to accept bids to purchase a new dump truck for the Public Works Department at Monday night’s council meeting.
Public Works Director David Nelson said the dump truck the city uses is a 1996 model with more than 210,000 miles.
“With the cost of fuel rising, most cities are purchasing smaller trucks to do the job,” Nelson said. “A smaller truck will save the city money.”
Nelson said General Truck of Dunbar, a state approved vendor, offered the city a deal on a smaller GMC truck that has the same capacity and lifts the same weight as the city’s truck.
Council Finance Chairwoman Connie Boardman insisted the city place bids to find the lowest price because money wasn’t allotted in the budget for a new truck.
